Self-taught artist Ashley Longshore opens her book, You Don’t Look Fat, You Look Crazy, like this: My name is Ashley Motherfucking Longshore.

From there, it’s unputdownable. I read it—devoured it—in one sitting, like a pint of (not Vegan) Talenti Burnt Butter sorbet.

When I need a laugh, I go to her Instagram feed. She’s got two. One is full of curse words and the other isn’t. Guess which I prefer? I especially love how she’s turned marketing into performance art — something I’ve always aspired to.

Henry Miller (Portrait #71) said: Paint as you like and die happy. Both he and Ashley MF Longshore have given me big fat permission slips to do just that.

Thanks y’all.

And now, I pass the permission slip along to you. Especially if you're feeling jealous.

Jealousy is just a sign that we want what they got. Yeah!

These small, original portraits are painted on top pages cut and upcycled from my sketchbooks.

This portrait is from the series, 100 Portraits in 100 Days: A Quarantine Diary.

What began as a creative challenge to focus my energies during the first weeks of solo quarantine in March 2020, evolved into a diary of my experience.
