Do you ever plan fantasy dinners, imagining who you would invite —both real and fictional people, dead or alive? I often plan fantasy teas. I know, I know, I need an actual social life. And this painting is a scene from one of them.
I used a bunch of those red SOLD dots leftover from an exhibit plus some vintage butterflies, they aren’t stickers, but those fancy pressed papers from somewhere in Europe that they used to make. I bought these at a flea market in Amsterdam.
Something I noticed about working on top of old sketchbook pages from 2009, is that the day of the week and date match this year’s. For example, in this piece you can see Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the top (from my original sketchbook), which was last Sunday’s date.
Since I’m doing these so spontaneously, I haven’t tried matching up the dates. Maybe that will happen?
Who is invited to your fantasy tea?
These small, original portraits are painted on top pages cut and upcycled from my sketchbooks.
This portrait is from the series, 100 Portraits in 100 Days: A Quarantine Diary.
What began as a creative challenge to focus my energies during the first weeks of solo quarantine in March 2020, evolved into a diary of my experience.
