Rocky Honeyboy El Leoncito Dulcecito Vasquez Garcia.

Portrait of a miracle dog, rescued from dog fighting in Mexico.

He still has nightmares that make him whimper, maybe about his old fighting days. Some of his wounds took over a year to heal. The emotional scars, even longer. Just like us humans.

It’s hard to imagine him, or any dog, in that life. He’s named after THE ROCKY — of course, but he has nicknames, like a proper boxing champion: he’s so sweet, the color of honey, and reminds me of a little lion.

Painted from a photo of him where he loves to nap, right under the yellow chair in my studio. Always by my side.Feeling very grateful for the company of animals, and the opportunity to help this guy have another chance at life. He’s a big love.

P.S. Sylvester Stallone, if you’re reading this: Strangely, not many people know that you paint. I love how you painted that self-portrait (Rocky) to express your struggling actor frustrations, before you wrote Rocky, the film. Painting and writing. You’re my art crush forever. Might you like this one for your collection?

These small, original portraits are painted on top pages cut and upcycled from my sketchbooks.

This portrait is from the series, 100 Portraits in 100 Days: A Quarantine Diary.

What began as a creative challenge to focus my energies during the first weeks of solo quarantine in March 2020, evolved into a diary of my experience.
