“And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see – or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read.”
— Alice Walker
No matter what your relationship with your mother or grandmother, you are part of a creative lineage that stretches out across time and place. It began long before your birth and will continue after you shed this mortal coil.
The idea of lineage first made it’s way to me as a student of the dharma – the teachings of the Buddha. Students from the various branches of Buddhism trace their lineage back to the source. The student acknowledges the teachers who passed down the practices and information.
Creative work is usually solitary. It can be isolating. One of my higher purposes as a teacher and writer is to creative community. To build connections among kindreds.
Your creative lineage includes the people, places and things that impact on you on as you forge your creative self and life.
These are the artists, teachers, and peers who inspire us, and and the art and projects that teach us something about ourselves and our own work.
We are all part of a great creative journey relay where the torch is passed as inspiration, encouragement, ideas, and sympatico vibes. We are the carriers of a burning flame, the desire to create.
For today’s journal prompts, you can think of your family of origin, or your family of creative lineage.
What creative sparks were passed to you, and from whom?
What creative sparks will you pass along to others?
