Let me just tell you right up front that seeing how and what other artists pack their art supplies for travel is a major obsession.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, it’s only fair to open up my own traveling sketchbook bag and show you how I sketch and make art on the road without lugging around so much paint.
In today’s Studio Journal video, you’ll get a tour of the contents of the art supply bag I packed for a recent tour of some one of my favorite sketching spots in Oaxaca, Mexico.
At the beginning of the video, I mention the field trip we took to sketch in Oaxaca, which you can view here:
Sketching in Mexico: Field Trip to Cuilapam Ruins in Oaxaca
Since this was a road trip, I didn’t bother traveling particularly light.
Guess how many visual journals (a.k.a., sketchbooks, art journals) I brought along?
What are your must-have art supplies when your travel?
Would you like to see more videos and supply lists from other creative travelers? Are you as obsessed as I am with what goes in the art supply bag?
Speaking of travel…
JOURNEY is the theme of the next 30 Day Journal Project.
Have you hear? Have you signed up yet? (It’s F R E E!)
Supply List?
Would you like a supply list of all the art supplies I’ve shown you in this video?
I’m thinking of getting that together, if there is interest. Would it help you?

Lisa, you are such an inspiration… I am by no means an artist. Someday 🙂
Donna 🙂
YES, YES, please, a supply list would be welcome tool to have.
Thanks
Sure, Lisa, a supply list would be helpful.
Lisa, bless you for sharing your creation treasures! I get what you mean when you find the perf connection with just the right feel, effect, splash, color, texture! Love your organization and I, too, would lik o see these puppies in A C T I O N! What is gouache used for! I have heard te name by have never seen it in action! Thank you dear for all you do!xoxox Darlene Rose you began my today in happy colors!
Hi Lisa,
I would love to see whats in your list PLEASE!!
As a beginning artist, I’m also interested in the supply list. It’s easy for me to get distracted by the shiny bits without knowing the basics. Your travel list helps me to see the important parts. Though I still like the shiny bits.
Would love the supply list, I love checking out art supplies. Probably spend too much time checking out supplies and not enough doing art. Always looking for that perfect bag to put supplies in!!!
Janine! The PERFECT bag! I get it!
It’s always fun to peek into someone else’s bag of art supplies! The purse organizer is brilliant. It looks like I’ll be purchasing one of those soon, now. Lol.
Looking forward to the 30 Day Journey! Thank you!
I love these Studio Journal glimpses! Thank you for taking the time to show your process and tools. Whenever I travel, my list making for my artsy stuff is longer and more compelling than my clothing list. ha! That’s one reason I’d rather drive than fly…..so I can take a TRUNK FULL of artsy tools, journals and books!
YES PLEASE!? SUPPLIES LIST!!! Please tell me the name of your bag! I love the pockets & the color of the brown bag you have in the video!
Hello ,
Wanted to let You know that I Love Your Web-site
Would love to have your travel info on what you take with you !
Thanks and God Bless
Like you, I’m soooo curious to see what other people pack, and have been on the lookout for any such videos and articles for years. That’s how I first heard of the Sakura Koi field sketch set, and got one of my own, which has been my favorite traveling companion ever since.
Other travel essentials include at least 3 different sketchbooks, brush pen for inking, fine liner, mechanical pencil, colored pencils, white marker, erasers, sharpeners…
I never pack acrylics or gouache since I only rarely use them in my sketchbooks.
If you’d like me to contribute a video with my show & tell, I’d be happy to 🙂
Yes, Nela! I would love to feature your show and tell video!
Awesome! I’ll email you when I create it 🙂
Wow! I can’t believe how many art supplies you can fit in a bag! That’s amazing…I love how you put everything in a bag organiser – great idea! These art supplies are a whole different world to me. I would love to discover how you use them and your supply list too
Ha ha! Yes, I think of myself as a surgical packer, and these weren’t even well organized, as I was in a hurry. Supply list and some tutorials coming up!
I am a rank beginner and am very grateful for your video. Would also like a video on how to use the supplies.
Yes, definitely would like to get your supply list!
Yay!
Wow! So much stuff I have not tried. That was a wonderful peek behind the scenes. Thank you!
You’re so welcome, Julie! Thanks for popping over!
Enjoyed this video. I’m almost just as interested in bags as well as supplies. I would like to see what your bag packing looks like when you fly somewhere. If you bring anything with you on board what that is and how it is packed.
Great questions, Paula! Will cover these in future editions of my studio journal. Thanks so much!
I loved this video – it is so much fun to go through someone else’s stuff – legally LOL
Thanks for this – so looking forward to this journey.
Pam – I totally agree! So fun to get to see in someone’s bag!
Oh yes – a list of supplies would be awesome! Decisions are not my strong point, so this really helps.
Yes, I’d love a list of your supplies, esp. of all the variety of pencils! Thank you!
I too would love to see the list, when you have the time. Thanks for the video 🙂
You’re so welcome, Linda!
Yes! Yes! and Yes!
Some I am not familiar with, so seeing the use would be great!
Which supplies shown DO you use, Nancy?
If it is not too much of a distraction, I would love to see your supply list,
Hi Stacia! Not a distraction at all – I love making supply lists! I just need some time to do it, so I will post it here. Thank you!
I am very interested in a list of your supplies too. Plus, (idea)…would love video using each type of supply in your journal to see what they do and what you love about them.
Barbara! You are reading my mind! I had the same thought – that it would be fun to show you how I use each supply in my sketchbooks.
Ooh, yes! That’s what I really love to learn about… why an artist loves a particular art material. This video was particularly juicy in that regard. That purse organizer was really cool as well.
Thank, Ellen! I have an obsession for organizing BAGS, too. The purse organizer is great for toting around supplies.
Lisa .. this was so helpful and yes, it would be great to have the list. I’m launching into the realm of creative playing with color via art and some idea of what to use, REALLY helps. It’s a bit overwhelming at first! Thanks for that!
Dawn – yes, art supplies CAN be so overwhelming! I love to demystify them and make them more accessible to all who long to play with color!
i would love the supply list – this spring i will be staying at a monastery for a weekend retreat and plan to go journaling on their beautiful grounds – can’t take much though so this will be very helpful!
Wonderful idea, Ruth. Thank you for letting me know!
I am very interested in a supply list
Thanks, Faith!
